PLEASE HELP THE WOMEN OF WEND
A letter from our founder, Jolly Okot
Friends of WEND Africa,
WEND Africa had started to build a solid foundation by being a self funded organization, depending on the proceeds of the products made by the women to help pay the women. We had created a very strong product line and this has been the model to help the organization be sustainable. With the merchandize we had opted to gradually get out of donations since our desire is to be self sustainable, and create a trade relationship with other parts of the world.
HOLDING OUR PRODUCTS MEANS YOU ARE HOLDING THE HAND OF THE WOMAN WHO MADE THE PRODUCTS
The sales of the products were done in country but the majority were exported with the main market in the United States. Our products have been sold at exhibitions, events in churches, and pop up shops and were transported by air with and individual person who would help coordinate with different institutions. We needed to maintain a consistent inventory of the best sellers within the United States and other parts of the world.
With the global lockdown all the events scheduled has been cancelled. These events helped to raise support to the women and the children. The majority of our women are single mothers and with a difficult background.
With the current situation the women have not been able to get full monthly salary and thus they are struggling to get food to eat. Due to the nature of who our women are they stay in small rented huts in town and thus they are not able to cultivate crops.
With no public transport or even private transport all the distances are covered through walking. The women at WEND who needed medical attention especially those who are HIV positive have to walk to hospital.
The biggest challenge is that there is no food relief and thus starvation is a big threat. Most of these women have less than one meal a day.
We realize the global challenge of COVID-19 and our hearts bleed with every one. Our request for those who can is to help support the women to be able to get some food for their children. Any amount of contribution will make a difference.
